TAOS, NM — Wine connoisseurs, “foodies,” art lovers and the general public are invited to get a taste of the art of wine-making at the Toast of Taos Arts and Wine Festival, August 18 through 21, 2011. New Mexico happens to be the oldest wine producing region in the United States and boasts 42 wineries, including several in and around Taos.

“Participants will have the opportunity to mingle with wine makers and artists, attend seminars and enjoy fine dining at its best at the wine makers dinners culminating with the Grand Tasting,” said Jan Mellor, of the Toast of Taos Arts and Wine Fest. “Galleries and businesses will be hosting openings and events throughout the Historic District as they join in the celebration showcasing Taos’ fabulous art, food, landscape, and the magic that is our cultural heritage.

The weekend long events begin on August 18 at 5:30 p.m. with a Wine Seminar, led by Jo Ann Carolla-Polt, which is designed to help tasters appropriately pair the right wines with certain foods. Several wine selections are paired with various menu selections to compliment the wine and enhance the flavor of the dish. The seminar is being held at the El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa, and is $25 per person. Instructor, Carolla-Polt, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and is a trained chef, having worked in New York, Texas, Nevada and Florida, among other places.

Self-described “foodie” and cellar-master/Sommelier at the Historic Taos Inn, Craig Dunn, will delve into how wines evolved, what makes a wine taste the way it does, and reveal whether or not a winemaker has an impact on the outcome of the wine. Dunn’s wine seminar, “What’s in the Glass?” will take place on August 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Doc Martin’s in the Historic Taos Inn. The seminar is $25 per person. Participants will also get a blind taste test at the end of the seminar.

The highly anticipated “Grand Tasting” takes places on August 20, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Taos Convention Center. Admission is $50 per person and includes: entry, an incredible selection of wines for purchase, gourmet food from local restaurants, and a commemorative wine glass. A Silent Auction to benefit Taos Community Foundation and the Taos Arts and Cultural District will take place as well.

The Grand Tasting also offers an opportunity to view and purchase the winning festival poster painting “Memory’s Bar,” by acclaimed artist Alvaro-Cardona Hine. Hine will be on hand to meet participants. The original “Memory’s Bar” oil painting is available for purchase, as are signed copies of the exclusive poster. Copies are $20 which includes mailing to the 48 states. Copies can be purchased online at www.toastoftaos.com.

A number of participating Taos galleries and shops will have special sales, music, artist demos and wine tastings on August 21 as well.

Featured wineries around the Taos area that are participating include: La Chiripada, Vivac, Black Mesa, and Ponderosa. Other participating wineries are: Gruet, Oak Ridge Winery, Oak Hills Winery, Vino del Sol, Morgan Winery, Cline Vineyards, Chono Reserva, Rayun, Clearwater Creek, and Kenwood. Wine making has been an integral part of life in New Mexico since the early Spanish settlers brought their vines to the State in the 15th century.

Tickets for seminars can be purchased online at www.toastoftaos.com. For more information about the Toast of Taos Arts and Wine Festival, call (575) 758-3911 or email info@toastoftaos.com.
