To be eligible, the nominee may or may not have formal culinary training. Criteria are designed to include several considerations; each consideration need not be present to qualify as a nominee. The nominee must be a culinary professional, i.e., a restaurant chef or owner at an establishment that may include any and all levels from casual to fine dining, a cookbook author, broadcast professional, culinary consultant, culinary teacher, etc.
