IFWTWA Press Trip Video to Temecula 5-2010

Monday, May 31st, 2010 — posted by Maralyn D. Hill

May 16-19, 2010 was another successful IFWTWA press trip to Temecula, California. This video captures a miniature view of what we enjoyed. Those who were with, will have the pleasant memories, those who did not attend, you can see some of what you missed.

Special thanks to our major sponsors, Temecula Creek Inn (TCI), Temecula CVB and Kissam Consulting for bringing this all together.

In addition we wish to thank our hosts for events.
TCI and Leonesse Cellars provided an opening reception.

Thornton Winery had Winemaker Don Reha took us on a tour and then we enjoyed a cooking demonstration with Executive Chef Steve Pickel. This was followed by a wonderful Winemaker Dinner.

The next morning started out at the Stone House at TCI for breakfast.

The afternoon was a Team Building Cooking Adventure at Baily’s Restaurant in Old Town. What delicious dishes our two teams prepared.

The evening had us back at TCI for a Winemaker Dinner with Robert Renzoni Vineyards wines paired with Executive Chef Salvatore Giuliano’s creations. To work off some dinner, not much, we ventured to the golf course for some Glo Ball. It was just plain fun.

The next morning we ventured out to the Temecula Olive Oil Company Ranch and learned about growing, harvesting, standards, and tasting olive oil. What a treat. We did a lot of damage to our plastic when we hit its store in Old Town Temecula in shipping some for us and some for gifts.

After the ranch, we headed for Ponte Winery. In addition to touring the property, gardens, winery, and enjoying a delightful lunch with Executive Chef and Winemaker, we can say Ponte is an all around experience.

In the evening we ventured to Hart Winery. In addition to learning about three different systems of trellising grape vines as well as wine history in the valley. We enjoyed a BBQ dinner and wine in the barrel room.

Our last morning we enjoyed breakfast at Pechyanga. After that, we moved on to enjoy Old town Temecula. Naturally, we took advantage of a wine tasting at Tesoro Winery Tasting Room and Lorimar Tasting Room. We grabbed a quick lunch at Soro’s Mediterranean Grill.

Temecula has so much more to offer. We are looking forward to a trip back. Maybe you will join us next time.

The Sacred Art and Architecture of Taos
This summer, as part of  “Return to Sacred Places,” the Taos Festival of Art and Architecture will offer visitors a rare and intimate glimpse into the sacred art and architecture that help define this magical region.

The signature event of the festival is a community collaboration with the church elders of San Francisco de Assisi Church. Through the decades the St. Francis Church in Ranchos de Taos has been the subject of  artwork by Georgia O’Keeffe, Ansel Adams, and countless others. This structure, also known as the Ranchos Church, is one of the most painted and photographed churches in all the world.  In 2009, the church was named among the Top Things to See Before You Die by Yahoo.com.

Since the adobe church was completed in 1815, each year a layer of plaster mixed with straw is applied to its massive-yet-fragile skin to protect it from the elements. Locals and visitors alike are invited to participate in the yearly “re-mudding.” The work will take place between June 7th and June 18th. To get involved call the Church Office at 575-758-2754.

Commemorating this one-of-a-kind structure doesn’t end there. A  juried exhibition of paintings and photographs, “A Humble Masterpiece: San Francisco de Assisi Church” will hang in the Encore Gallery of the Taos Community Auditorium at 133 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, now through June 13th. The artist reception for this free exhibition is Saturday, May 22nd, from 2 to 5 pm. For information call 575-758-2052 or visit www.tcataos.org.

On Saturday May 29th, Taos living treasure, Larry Torres, will host two tours of “Four Taos Valley Adobe Churches and Moradas.” Mr. Torres is the preeminent scholar in his field and this is a rare opportunity. Tours will leave Town Hall at 10 am and 2 pm. $20 per person. For information call 575-751-0647.

On Friday, June 4th at 8 pm in the Encore Gallery of the Taos Community Auditorium, the Festival continues with “The Glory of Adobe,” an evening of films, lectures, and a multimedia show of artwork inspired by the Ranchos Church, and presentations by the craftsmen who have maintained the church and created religious icons. Admission is $10 for adults. For information call 575-758-2052.

Then at the Town of Taos Public Library, next door to Town Hall at 400 Camino de la Placita, on June 5th from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, the library is sponsoring a free lecture, “San Francisco de Asis Church–Ranchos de Taos,” by Taos historian David Maes.

For over two hundred years, the Church has served as the heart and soul of the Ranchos community. Thousands of visitors travel to this sacred place to gaze at the Church’s sloping buttresses and to connect spiritually with our past and future. Come and learn why this is the case—historically, currently, and for the future.

On June 12th, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, also at the Town of Taos Public Library, will be a free lecture and photographic presentation, “Heritage and History: The Camposantos of Taos”, by Harvey Solomon, Taos historian, and Ron Reinikainen, librarian. This presentation is about Taos area camposantos, many of which are in lovely settings close to moradas and oratorias, and include simple rock markers inscribed only with a cross dating back to early Hispanic colonization.

Events begin with a grand procession Friday night.www.taospueblopowwow.com or call 575-741-1081.

The Feast Day of Santiago, which takes place July 26th at the Taos Pueblo will offer visitors a glimpse into the lives of the people of the Taos Pueblo, an over 1,000 year old community designated as both a UNESCO Living World Heritage Site and on the list of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This is a special Taos Pueblo observation that offers families the time to reconnect with tradition through dances, songs and food. No photography or recording is allowed, as these feast days are important religious ceremonies.www.taospueblo.com

Fiestas de Taos is a community celebration honoring the two patron saints of Taos, Santa Ana and Santiago. The annual event, popularly referred to as “The Taos Fiestas,” is traditionally a time when the local population is invited to put aside their labor for two days and enjoy the leisure of the holy days.

“22″ Launch

At a function to be held tomorrow morning at the State Library, writingWA and the WA Department of Education will officially launch “22″.

“22” is a poetry resource that has been developed for use in secondary schools in Western Australia.  The resource comprises an audio CD featuring 20 Western Australian poets reading selected works. The CD is supported with an accompanying text publication, in addition to individual lesson plans relating to each of the 22 poems featured on the CD. The lesson plans have been developed specifically to assist teachers to make maximum use of the resource in the classroom.

“22″ has been produced by writingWA working in close collaboration with the WA Department of Education from the project’s inception through to its launch tomorrow.  This collaboration with the Department has been particularly exciting and we hope this is just the first of many similar initiatives in the coming years.

AGM and new Board Members

At writingWA’s AGM, held on 28 April, three new members were elected to the Board of Management.  We warmly welcome to the Board author and editor Amanda Curtin, author Julia Lawrinson and editor Michele Drouart who have each been elected for a two year term.

Off the Shelf and writingWA

Earlier this year writingWA began contributing a regular monthly column of  reviews to The West‘s ‘Books’ pages.  The last Off the Shelf column of each month – always published on a Tuesday – is now provided by writingWA and exclusively features reviews of publications by West Australian authors and publishers. In consultation with Books Editor Will Yeoman, writingWA selects a range of titles each month that crosses genres, and mixes new releases with other selected titles that we feel deserve fresh attention. We are thrilled to be working with The West in this way and look forward to continuing to spotlight West Australian creators and West Australian content.
